about seven seconds. Two laps later Michael makes a pitstop which
lasts 8.8 seconds. David's stop on the next lap is 7.3 seconds
long. After the stops the gap between Michael and David is five
seconds. DC catches Michael easily, and few laps later tries to
pass him at Adelaide, but ends up only giving Michael the finger.
Six laps later, on lap 39, DC finally manages to pass Michael -
at Adelaide. DC increases his lead. His second stop on lap 46

is stopped probably because of an error at the computers. After
that, there's a crowd at Loews. Third start is the final one. At
the top 5 everyone keep their places.
Race:

second a lap faster than Jarno's. DC is stuck behind Trulli, as
well as Mika is behind Frenzen. R Schumi is 6th. On lap 36 Mika
has a problem in his car and drives slowly to the pits. On the
next lap David almost hits the wall at St. Devote when he tries
to pass Trulli. Mika's stop lasts over 50 seconds, and he's 14th
when he finally returns to the track. On the same lap Trulli
retires due to a technical failure. On the next lap Ralf
Schumacher hits the wall and hurts his leg. Michael's lead to DC
is 37 seconds, but David starts to catch him. On lap 49 Schumi
makes his pit stop which lasts 7 seconds. After the stop
Michael's lead to DC is 11 seconds. After few laps the gap is
only 5 seconds. Then, on lap 55 Michael's car brakes down, and DC
gets the lead. David's pit stop on next lap lasts 7 seconds.
Frenzen is second, 17 seconds behind. On lap 70 Frenzen hits the
wall in first corner and retires. Now Barrichello is second, 23
seconds behind. When the flag falls down, the gap between the

Start:
Schumi is badly trapped, almost hits Mika and drops down to 8th
place, behind his brother Ralf and Villeneuve. Barrichello and
Frenzen keep their positions, David passes Mika and takes the
third place. Mika is 4th, Button 5th and Villeneuve 6th.
Race: Ralf
passes Jacques and is now 6th. The first six cars stick together
for the first 20 laps, the gap between Barrichello and Ralf is
about four seconds. Schumi is stuck behind Villeneuve and the gap
to his team mate increases all the time. Frenzen and the
Williams-drivers (Ralf & Jenson) have a two-stop strategy,
they make their first stops after 20 laps. The first three cars
(Barrichello, DC, Häkkinen) are still very close, the gap
between the leader and Mika is 1.5 seconds. On lap 31 David
passes Barrichello and takes the lead. On the same lap Mika
visits pits - 11 seconds. David's stop two laps later lasts one
second less. On lap 35 Barrichello retires. After his only stop
David drops down to fourth place, but when the cars in front of
him make their second stops (Schumi his only one) DC leads again.
Häkkinen is on second place ten seconds behind. 15 laps to go,
David experiences a gearbox problem which slows him down and Mika
is able to catch him enormously. Finally David's car lasts to the
end, the gap is 1.5 seconds when the flag falls down. Schumi
takes the third place thanks to his strategy and others'
retirements.

to get past Eddie, but doesn't succeed.
Race: Mika

F1-SEASON 2001
AUSTRALIAN
GRAND PRIX 4.3.01, Melbourne
The first qualifying session of the F1-season 2001 didn't work out well for DC. After having problems during the hour his position at the starting grid was 6th. The Ferraris were fast - Michael Schumacher took the pole and Rubens Barrichello was second.
"WHAT'S
WRONG WITH THIS THING?"
The Australian GP was eventful
from start to finish. DC took a good start but hit then gently to
the rear tyres of two other cars. After the first lap DC was 7th,
but after the second lap he was already 5th. On the third lap
Barrichello tried to overtake Frenzen, but managed only to send
H-H off the circuit. At this point DC was 4th... On the next lap
Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve collided badly, and the
safety car came out. And for the second time within six months a
marshall died, and several spectators were hurt.On lap 26 Häkkinen drove off the track and retired. Because of this DC took the 3rd place. A few laps later DC overtook Rubens and had the 2nd place. After the pitstops the gap between the leader - Schumi - and David was 15 seconds, but at the finishline the gap was just 1.7 seconds...
The most positive
thing about the first race of the 2001 season was McLaren's
reliability. The two previous years both cars retired, and the
pre-season tests had indicated that also this year that might be
the case. And even though victory was the only goal, second place
feels especially good because of Mika's retirement. Next stop:
Malaysia...
PROFESSIONAL
Despite of all the
distraction, in Melbourne DC showed what he's made of: he's a
professional to the bone, as already season 2000 proved us. A lot
has changed since 1999...
